The Dance Minor

Requirements (6 units of coursework):

·  ARTD 140 Approaches to Dance: Themes and Perspectives

·  Dance Composition: All courses offered by the dance program titled Dance Composition are eligible to fulfil this requirement. Minors are required to take one course in dance composition and majors are required to take two courses.

·  One full credit of technique or ensemble (two semester-long courses at .5 per semester), which may be distributed among the following: ARTD B136, 137, 138, 139, 141, 230, 231, 232, 330, 331, or 345, 346, 347, 348, 349, 350.

·  Three elective credits from Dance Program courses. One elective, with the advisor’s approval, may be selected from allied Tri-Co departments or programs.

The Dance Independent Major A.B.

The independent major in dance is undergoing a review and revision period to update the curriculum and thesis procedures. During this time, the dance program will pause acceptance of applications. We anticipate the independent major in dance to resume in Fall 2027 with the program accepting applications in the Spring 2028 semester.

Additional Requirement Info:

• Students wishing to minor or major in dance should aim to complete at least one of the Dance Composition courses (142, 242) by spring of their second year.
• Approaches to Dance, ARTD 140.  If you are planning to do a semester abroad in your junior year, you should take this course in a timely manner as it is required for both the minor and the major.

Dance into the Future:

• The are a wide array of paths for folks in dance. Dance majors and minors have gone on to pursue dance or arts-related fields including performance; dance and general education; movement and physical therapy, academia and authorship; dance criticism; body techniques; arts management and more; others went on to become doctors or professors or public health workers, often continuing to dance or expanding the audience for dance.
