Storytelling as Self-Care: The Urgency of Narrative after Boccaccio's Decameron
The Department of Transnational Italian Studies cordially invites you to attend Professor Martin Marafioti's presentation entitled "Storytelling as Self-Care: The Urgency of Narrative after Boccaccio's Decameron." The event will take place on Friday, February 7th from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. in Old Library 251.
This presentation deals with the tradition of storytelling in times of epidemic illness, focusing on Giovanni Boccaccio’s Decameron. Numerous fourteenth-century plague manuals accorded significance to the emotional realm by discussing the importance of maintaining high spirits. We will explore how the power of language is reflected throughout the Decameron, specifically analyzing instances that illustrate the urgent, lifesaving, fate-altering power of language.
