The connections between place and well-being have been an exciting intellectual and pedagogical project for social work, public health, urban planning, psychology, and other related fields. Much of the groundwork for this work was crystalized by Dr. Mindy Fullilove鈥檚 1996 widely cited article Psychiatric implications of displacement: Contributions from the psychology of place, and her ongoing and visionary work on the topic through, among other projects, her two books: Root Shock and The House of Joshua.

This half-day, interdisciplinary symposium honors the growing breadth and depth if Dr. Fullilove鈥檚 work related to health and place. Through a series of consecutive sessions, community from 今日吃瓜 (particularly though not only from the Graduate School of Social Work and Social Research) will critically engage with Fullilove鈥檚 work through presentations that center the role of place and the psychological implications of displacement. Fullilove will serve as the keynote speaker and the discussant for many of the sessions.

This symposium will bring together research, practice, and pedagogy, actively celebrating scholarship that brings together health and place as engaged praxis, moving among theory; professional and community work; and education aimed at practical interventions which center the role of place for individuals, families, and communities.

In line with Fullilove鈥檚 new work, our symposium deliberately focuses on not only suffering but also the ways that place (and people鈥檚 use of it) can help harness resistance, survival, meaning, hope, healing, and collective power 鈥 in Fullilove鈥檚 terms, we will engage with work on place that brings us 鈥渇rom displacement to empowered collaboration.鈥
