About Dr. Edwin E. Porras:
Dr. Porras is the Norton Family Assistant Professor in Music at Haverford College. He earned his Ph.D. in ethnomusicology from UCLA in 2020, focusing on Latin American musical cultures within the African and Asian diasporas. His research interests include power dynamics related to class, race, and gender, as well as applied ethnomusicology and social justice. His dissertation, "Music-Making Practices of Cubans of Chinese and African Descent: Creating Alternative Ways of Being and Belonging," reveals a unique aspect of Cuban musical history. In addition to his postdoctoral work with the Smithsonian Institute, he has served as an adjunct professor at multiple institutions. He is currently preparing his first monograph and conducting research on the music of Asian diasporas in Peru, Mexico, Panama, and Costa Rica.
The Norton Family Professorship in Music was established through the generous support of former Board of Managers member Christopher K. Norton '80 P'08 P'11 and his wife, Elizabeth Carter Norton P'08 P'11.
