Delivery: Synchronous and Asynchronous Online Program

NoteThis workshop is required of those enrolled in the School Social Worker and Home and School Visitor Certificate programs. 

This workshop is composed of two fall term classroom sessions plus a student-arranged classroom observation at either the elementary or secondary level that includes an interview of an ESL instructor. Student presentations of their observations are shared in the second classroom session. Classroom discussion topics include: ESL key vocabulary terms and acronyms; state legislation (BEC); stages of language acquisition; accommodations and adaptations; language levels and what they mean for planning, instruction, and assessment; cultural assimilation; special education, the differences between language difference and learning disability; parents' right to opt-out; emotional difficulties of new environment for parents and students; cultural sensitivity; effective communication with students, parents, teachers, and administrators; and recommended resources.

Schedule:

Synchronous Virtual Classroom 9 a.m.-12 p.m. both dates (6 hours) ET
Asynchronous Learning using Learning Management System (LMS) (4 hours)

  • Students will be given a 30-minute assignment that must be completed prior to the first class.
  • Students will be given an assignment that must be completed between session one and two. Time allotment 3.5 hours. 

Presenter: Angela Kunkle, M.Ed., is the Secondary ESL Program Specialist at Lampeter, Pa., School District, and teaches ESL students in grades 6-12. Her responsibilities include serving as consultant to all district teachers of English language learners, curriculum writing, and arranging translation and interpretation services.
