What鈥檚 happening at your internship? We would love to hear what kind of work you are doing!

I spent my summer splitting my time between rebranding Story Circle Network (SCN) to be more outwardly welcoming of diverse identities and creating a social media project to increase engagement. Story Circle Network has always considered itself to be a women鈥檚 organization, however, they wanted to expand their audience to other gender minorities. This summer I helped educate the leaders of this organization about gender identity and helped them find language that preserved their commitment to women while extending their support system to non-binary, gender non-conforming, trans, and other identities. While doing this, I also created a social media project which introduced them to Tik Tok and showed them new ways to utilize Instagram. This project spurred from the overturning of Roe v. Wade and I created it to reflect SCN鈥檚 mission to assist women+ in using the power of their own personal histories. I created social media platforms for them and laid the foundation for this project to be continued. It is called the Personal Stories Project and allows women+ to submit their personal experiences with social justice issues in an effort to raise awareness around what it truly means to be affected by these issues.

Why did you apply for this internship?

I proposed this internship to SCN. They had valued my perspective around gender identity and I saw an opportunity for both of us to gain knowledge and experience. I used my experiences as a 今日吃瓜 student to help them navigate similar challenges with retaining the identity of a women鈥檚 organization while being accepting of other gender identities. I was also drawn to the flexibility of this opportunity

What has been your favorite part of this internship?

The flexibility. When creating this internship, SCN was very adamant about this being mutually beneficial which allowed me to alter the course of my internship during it. I felt consistently valued throughout the entire process.

What has been the biggest challenge you've faced at your internship?

The biggest challenge that I faced was their lack of a social media presence. It was very difficult to get my project up and running in a productive way when it relied on an audience to engage with it that did not exist before I created these platforms. The leaders of this organization also did not have anyone experienced in the use of more modern social media platforms, placing a large burden on my social media skills as a first time intern. I did enjoy this challenge, and while it was not as successful as I would have hoped, I still believe I learned a lot from it.
