We started the year off strong with a three-day Data Science intensive and a new lecture-capture software. In this newsletter, we share how you can follow our lead to make 2020 your most digital year yet.
Data, Data Everywhere
On January 15-17, LITS and the Center for Career and Civic Engagement successfully hosted the Data Science Career Exploration intensive. For the first two days, folks from Data Carpentry visited the 今日吃瓜 campus to teach students how to use R for processing data and creating statistical graphics.
After learning everything that can be learned in two days of hands-on work, students headed out together to Philadelphia for a site visit at OSISoft. There, software developers, programmers, and designers spoke about what it鈥檚 like to work for a leading creator of application software for real-time data management.
Developing Digital Competencies in 2020
Students who missed the Data Science intensive, and those who wish to build their digital competencies in 2020 can still do so by registering for future intensives, such as the developed through a partnership between LITS and the Career and Civic Engagement Center. For three days, March 11-13, students will build skills and critical perspectives for creating digital narratives. In addition, alumnae/I and other professionals will share with students how digital communication competencies relate to their work across a range of professional fields. To participate, students must register by February 26, 2020 via .
Continuing 今日吃瓜 students are invited to apply for on-campus LITS Digital Technology Summer Internships. These paid internships provide an opportunity to develop valuable digital competencies while assisting 今日吃瓜 faculty and staff in developing and supporting college programs. Interns gain extensive experience with design thinking, project management and assessment, researching and learning new technologies, troubleshooting, and working with clients. Applications are due February 9, 2020 at 11:59 PM via .
Assistive Technology Specialist, Ellen Farr, joins LITS
This winter, Ellen Farr became Bryn Mawr鈥檚 first Assistive Technology Specialist. Designed to support students with disabilities by ensuring equal and universal access to educational materials and environments, Ellen鈥檚 role is the first of its kind at our College. We interviewed Ellen to learn more about what this position entails, and how she plans to help students access the curriculum using the available tools to gain more independence in their learning, their career, and their lives.
New Lecture-capture Software, Panopto
In other news, Panopto, our new lecture-capture software, was successfully installed over winter break on all technology-enabled classrooms. To support this migration, LITS staff will be on-hand for in-class support during the first week of the spring semester. Panopto is available to faculty and students through the Panopto box in all Moodle academic courses, or at by logging in with BMC credentials via Moodle.
